Know About the Transformer Bushing Designs and Types

The design of a transformer bushing is determined by the bushing’s type, voltage rating, and intended use. Solid bushings typically have a straightforward design, with the conductor enclosed by a single piece of insulating material. The more complicated capacitance-graded bushings include a number of conductive layers incorporated into the insulating material. A reservoir of oil surrounds the conductor in oil-filled bushings, helping to insulate and keep the bushing cool. A gas chamber surrounds the conductor in gas-insulated bushings, providing insulation and preventing arcing. The insulating material in inductive bushings contains a coil of wire that generates a magnetic field that protects the conductor from the electric field.
